This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Here's a challenge for partners in committed relationships who enjoy scary movies: Get comfortable with your partner and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its streaming debut on Hulu. At first glance, it could look like typical biological terror, but beneath Together exists a profound examination about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Debut Feature Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for over ten years. Married in real life in 2017, the two stars infuse a unique chemistry to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.

The story starts when Millie and Tim move from the metropolis to the countryside for professional reasons. A commonly used plot device, admittedly, but that’s largely where the tropes conclude. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim tumble into an underground cave. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity starts to affect the pair. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying of scares, interspersing bits of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). Shanks weaves these elements together neatly and presents them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and removed from his network of friends. He dreads the notion of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is amplified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie never makes one partner or the other the obvious villain.

The couple face the type of challenges that are inherent in long-term unions over a long period. Deep down, they continue to care for each other. They find humor with each other, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of codependency and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor does not come across as hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a strong argument for remaining unattached. On the other hand, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your significant other and say, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
